We
all want happiness, either for our world
or for ourselves.
But
happiness seems difficult
if not impossible to find.
If
only we could sit down,
wherever we are, close our eyes, and through some miracle let go of all
thoughts, distractions, and problems. If only we could let go.
Now we can do just that.
Everyone
wants to enjoy life
more. Some people have stressful jobs or stressful home life and would
like nothing better than to be able to wash away that stress every day.
Others feel they lack mental energy or direction. Still others have no
such problems, but would like greater fulfillment in personal
relationships, to work more creatively or productively, or feel more
fulfilled in life.
We can only really enjoy life when we have inner strength and peace.
Just as a contractor would build downward, constructing subbasements,
in order to build a tall skyscraper, we should retire from physical and
mental activity for a few minutes in order to gain strength in thought
and action over the course of an entire day.
The relationship of Mystic Mantra Meditation ™ to
the rest
of your life is this: Mystic Mantra Meditation ™ washes away
stress and purifies the nervous system. This makes perception in daily
life clearer and richer and makes our activity more effective and
enjoyable
Mystic
Mantra Meditation
™ is not a religion, a set of physical exercises,
or a
philosophy; it is an effortless mental technique that is compatible
with any religion or lifestyle.
Mystic Mantra Meditation ™ makes use of the natural
functioning of the mind: the mind is always thinking thoughts. In fact,
it is almost impossible to stop the mind from thinking.
Instead of opposing this functioning, Mystic Mantra Meditation
™
actually makes use of it. This is why Mystic Mantra Meditation
™
is natural and effortless.
We can use a simple model of the mind to explain how thinking works and
how Mystic Mantra Meditation ™ makes use of this process.
The mind can be likened to a lake. Thoughts, of whatever kind, arise
like tiny bubbles from the quiet bottom of the lake. These thoughts
become more concrete, like bubbles expanding in size as they ascend
towards the surface.
Finally they enter our awareness, and can cause us to act, just as
bubbles bursting on the surface of the lake may give rise to the
surface activity of waves.
In Mystic Mantra Meditation ™, the attention of the mind
starts
from where it already is: from the surface or concrete level of
thinking. From that level we begin the technique, in which our
attention gets drawn naturally to more abstract and quieter levels of
thinking, which are more charming to the mind (our thinking always aims
at greater happiness and satisfaction, for ourselves and others).
This process is called transcending. Transcending is effortless,
simple, natural, and innocent. No concentration or contemplation is
needed, and anyone who can follow directions can learn how to transcend.
In Mystic Mantra Meditation ™, the mind picks up a mantra, or
sacred syllable, which is used for its sound value only. Both the
mantra and the method of using the mantra are taught in Mystic Mantra
Meditation ™. No matter what type of meditation, only this
unique
combination of suitable mantra and the method of using it can give rise
to the process of efficient transcending.
This process of transcending is enjoyable and brings quietness to the
entire nervous system. Since the body always follows the mind, the body
becomes more quiet and rested. As the body quiets down, stress is
released. The release of stress purifies the nervous system, leaving it
more flexible, alert, and rested.
With repeated practice, this purification process brings
self-actualization for the individual and the benefits of a peaceful,
loving, and creative influence on his or her environment and
society.
For
those visitors who
remember Transcendental Meditation®, which was a very popular
self-improvement technique in the 1970s, transcending, as described
here, is the same unique mental process as was taught in TM®,
consisting of a systematic and effortless reduction in mental activity
while alertness is maintained. This process of transcending generates a
unique, missing, yet necessary physiological state of consciousness
which has frequently been called restful alertness.
